Dense shoals of young Coal-fish (Gadus virens) were present in Shetland coastal and sheltered waters during the period and while this undoubtedly had something to do with the activity, it is remarkable that similar periods of Coal-fish abundance have never before attracted Gannets in numbers?From January 27th until February 10th roughly five hundred Gannets visited Lerwick Harbour daily. They came in from the open sea at daybreak and returned again to the open sea at dusk. Dense masses of young Coal-fish had packed into the harbour and on these the Gannets fed
